Disney Buys a Stake in Hulu

huluDisney has announced that it’s acquired a stake in quickly growing video site Hulu, joining News Corp and NBC Universal in the venture. That means full-length episodes of ABC hits shows like Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives will be available side-by-side with content from NBC and News Corp’s FOX.

It also means that CBS – who publishes its own full-length episodes on its site and on TV.com – is left as the odd-man out when it comes to big TV networks on Hulu. It also gives Hulu a huge leg-up on YouTube, who is just getting started in licensing content from the big media companies and so far has a fairly uninspiring selection of shows.

Peter Chernin, COO of News Corp, talks to the nature of Hulu’s now big lead in pro content in a statement: “Hulu, quite simply, now has the best premium content on the web. With three major networks and over 150 leading content providers providing content, combined with the best video user interface anywhere on the web, Hulu offers consumers the finest premium online video experience available today.”

It’s hard to dispute that after today’s deal, which sees Disney take what is reported to be a 30 percent stake in Hulu.

Phishing on Facebook: Another Day, Another Scam [WARNING]

facebookAs social networks grow, so too grow attempts to rip off their users. Today, another phishing scam is underway on Facebook with a slightly different twist on yesterday’s outbreak.

If you receive an email with the subject line “Look at this!” and a link to fbstarter.com, do not open it. It’s a phishing scam of the same variety as that we saw on Wednesday, which linked to a site called FBAction.net. Both of these sites attempt to steal your login information, and then send the message that you see below to all of your friends.

facebook phishing

Our advice remains the same as yesterday: As always, don’t enter your Facebook password if the URL is not Facebook.com, and contact Facebook if you’re no longer able to access your account.

Of course, this gets a bit trickier as more and more legitimate websites implement Facebook Connect, though we’re yet to see any scams that look to exploit this.

Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

The latest study by Nielsen Mobile reveals some not-really-that-surprising data about Twitter mobile demographics. As it turns out, Twitter users are predominantly young and male, with a 57/43 percent male/female ratio and 49 percent of users in the 35+ age group.

Nielsen compares this data to the demographics of Predicto, which is the largest paid mobile community (Twitter is the largest free mobile community), and it turns out that it’s quite different. Predicto has a very different male/female user ratio – 45/55, and 68 percent of users are in the 35+ age group.

What does it mean to be the largest free mobile community? It means 812,000 unique SMS users; a relatively large portion of Twitter’s monthly 14 million visitors.

As far as earnings go, 16 percent of Twitter users earn $100K+, compared to 20 percent for Predicto. These stats will sure come in handy once – if – Twitter starts monetizing the service.
