Watch Tiger Woods Return to Golf on PGATour.com

Due to an injury, the PGA Tour has been without its biggest star since last year’s US Open, and as Tiger Woods finally returns to action this week, the organization is making sure to get as much mileage out of it as possible.

Not surprisingly, they’re turning to online video so fans can experience the event, with a special site where fans can watch Tiger’s round hole-by-hole from the Accenture Match Play Championship.

The site won’t go live until tomorrow on PGATour.com, but we’ve got a preview of it below. As you can see, you’ll be able to watch each hole individually, as well as see Tiger’s scorecard, which will be updated in real-time. Since it’s a Match Play tournament (head-to-head competition against another player), you’ll also see the scorecard of Tiger’s opponent. There will also be live blogging from a golf reporter, as well as a live bracket so you can see who Tiger might play next, assuming he wins.

This is a smart move for the PGA Tour, since the much anticipated event takes place during the workday and is being broadcast on the relatively low distribution Golf Channel. It’s also another win for Turner Sports, who co-producers PGATour.com, which is just coming off an impressive implementation of Facebook status updates with NBA All Star Game festivities.

As for why Tiger’s return is such a big deal for those of you non-golf fans out there, an ESPN poll this morning indicated that 49% of people will watch the Accenture event only because Tiger is playing.

TweetDeck Now Includes 12seconds Video Recording

Even though TweetDeck and 12seconds have long been cozy bed mates, today marks a new level of commitment; Twitter’s most popular desktop client and its online video clone are now making 12second babies.

12seconds is announcing that TweetDeck now supports their new authoring API in the latest release, so users will now be able to record – not just watch – 12second videos without ever leaving the app. For those with 140 character or 12 second attention spans, it’s a marriage made in application heaven.

12seconds tweetdeck

12seconds.tv is a video site analogous to Twitter where users can record or upload video entries of no more or less than 12 seconds in length, and follow friends’ updates in a reverse chronological timeline view. And now, all it takes is a click of a button for those same users to record an update while simultaneously managing their Twitter updates and groups inside of TweetDeck.

To use it, simply update to the latest version of TweetDeck, click the “12″ button to configure or create your 12seconds account, and then hit the record button whenever you’re in the mood to share 12 second video moments.

With today’s news, it looks as if 12seconds fans won’t be dumping TweetDeck anytime soon. In fact, as a long time lover of Twhirl and happy 12 second videographer, I’m finally ready to break-up with Twhirl for the convenience of updating 12seconds from within Tweetdeck.

The Tweetdeck and 12seconds video offspring, coupled with the fact that 12seconds is experimenting with real-time video rooms, makes us wonder if the Twitter-for-video site isn’t getting enough love. Given that developers can now leverage the new authoring API to allow 12ers to update on their own site (think video commenting and video contests on any site), 12seconds recently refreshed their user interface, and they have a pending rooms offering that is poised to trump FriendFeed rooms, we see huge potential for 12seconds and really like where these are guys headed.

Sol Lipman, Founder of 12seconds, created this screencast showing how ridiculously easy it is start recording updates via TweetDeck. Have a look, try it out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Safari 4 Beta Executes JavaScript Faster Than You Can Blink

Apple has just released a major new beta version of their web browser, Safari 4. It’s available for Mac OS X and Windows, and you can download it at the official Safari site.

So, what’s new? Well, it’s fast. Apple claims that the new JavaScript engine, Nitro, runs JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3, and up to 30 times faster than IE 7. I’ve tried it out, and there’s definitely some truth to those claims; Safari was blazing fast on every site we’ve tried, second perhaps only to Chrome in some cases.

It’s also the best browser as far as saving precious screen real estate goes. Similarly to Chrome, it uses the actual title part of the window for tabs, but the tab bar is a bit narrower. However, it still doesn’t care much for keyboard shortcuts with relation to other browsers; Ctrl+H, for example, won’t bring up browsing history like in Firefox, IE and Chrome. It’s a big deal; it makes it harder for users of other browsers to switch to Safari. Same goes for tab close buttons, which are located on the left side of the tab, not on the right like in most other browsers.

On the other hand, the Windows version of Safari mimics the look of Windows XP or Vista; I, personally, would prefer the look of the Apple version, but I couldn’t find the option to switch to it.

Other features include Cover Flow, iTunes style browsing through history or bookmarks; Top Sites, which is a wall of previews for frequently visited pages, and Smart Address and Search Field, which offer autocomplete based on Top Sites, as well as your bookmarks and history. For a full list of features, check Apple’s official press release.

Gmail Down, Panic Mode On (Update: It’s Back Up Again)

Gmail logoGmail is down, as you can see by a) trying it out yourself or b) listening to the tortured cries on Twitter. It’s funny and somewhat ironic to see people turning to Twitter when one of Google’s services is down: usually, it’s the other way around.

Trying to open Gmail will currently result in a “502 Server Error: The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.” Other Google services, such as Search, Reader, etc., are working fine.

There’s no official word from Google about the outage yet. As always, I feel uneasy; I rely on Gmail, and any prolonged outage is affecting my work and making me think about Google not being as bulletproof as most people usually think it is.

*Update: Google has posted a short note about the outage on their support page:

We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a number of users. This problem occurred at approximately 1:30AM Pacific Time. We’re working hard to resolve this problem and will post updates as we have them. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused.

*Update #2: Gmail is now back up for me and many other users. Still no word about it on Gmail’s official blog.

Imeem Lets You Sync Your Music Library With Your Android Mobile

As more and more native iPhone apps for streaming music pop up in the iTunes app store, Imeem’s mobile offering continues to evolve in feature-set while remaining firmly cemented to Google’s Android platform.

Fresh on the heels of Last.fm’s Android release, the newly revamped Imeem mobile app, available today, now includes MyMusic, which gives users access to their personal Imeem music library for on-the-road streaming. Imeem mobile music lovers can also create their own stations based on the artists and songs that they favorite, as well as share tracks with friends via email.

imeem mymusic

Already one of the 15 most popular Android apps, the new Imeem mobile builds on the app’s existing success with the new MyMusic module and its accompanying features. Though it may appear unremarkable, MyMusic gives users access to their entire library of Imeem songs, which includes music uploaded to the site.

In conjunction with the desktop Adobe AIR uploader, Imeem users can quickly import their iTunes library to the Web and then access those songs remotely from their mobile device. Essentially, it’s an immediate way for Android users to get the music they own from their desktop to their device.

Android Market may still look like the ugly step-child (even with paid apps) when compared side-by-side with the more mature iTunes app store, but given Imeem’s previous update to include location-aware streaming options, and existing success with the platform, it makes sense for them to continue to build out the app and solidify itself as the Android app of choice for music.
