Wordpress Ups Free Storage Space to 3GB

January 22, 2008

Automattic is upping the free Wordpress storage from 50mb to 3,000mb (a.k.a. 3GB). In taking the same approach to blogging that Google has taken with the Inbox, I’m personally quite happy about the storage increase, but I do wonder if this will affect most blogs that are supported by Wordpress, especially considering you’ll still need to pay for upgrades in order to support certain file types, like movies.

In the past year, Wordpress has been working on its infrastructure in order to support this change. According to its blog, Wordpress has in fact developed its file infrastructure, replication, backup, caching and S3-backed storage enough so that it no longer has to “artificially limit” what users can upload while still keeping up with its scalability.

For those of you that are paying for space, don’t feel slighted. Premium space has been increased, too. So if you already have 1GB in a paid space upgrade, it now adds 5GB for no additional charge. Yay!
